Luxury Handbag Packaging QC Checks: Carton Strength, Interior Presentation and the Ten Points Before a Carton Is Sealed

What should luxury handbag packaging QC check? Four things in order: that the carton survives transit, that the interior presentation matches the approved specification, that the labelling scans and matches the purchase order, and that the ten sealing checks were made before the tape went on. Packaging is the only part of a bag programme the customer sees before the bag, and it is the part most often specified in a single line. A carton at ECT 32 with board moisture under 14 percent and ten drops from 76 cm is a specification; a nice box is not.

One corner, three edges, six faces: the drop sequence that finds the failure a face-only test misses.

What Does Packaging QC Actually Check?

Packaging QC checks whether the carton, the interior and the labelling together deliver the piece in the condition it left the bench, and whether they present it the way the brand said they would.

That is two jobs that are usually conflated. The first is protective and measurable: does the carton survive a defined drop sequence. The second is presentational and sensory: does opening the box feel like the brand. Only the first can be reduced to a number, which is why the second needs a sealed reference rather than a description.

The failure mode is familiar. A brand writes a paragraph about tissue and ribbon, nothing at all about board grade, and then discovers in a returns report that the corner of the carton failed in transit rather than that the ribbon was wrong, by which point the whole delivery has to be repacked by hand at destination.

How Strong Does the Carton Need to Be?

Carton strength is specified by edge crush test or burst strength rather than by feel, and the number chosen depends on the packed weight and how the cartons are stacked in the container.

Six measurable carton checks. The drop sequence follows the pattern of one corner, three edges and six faces used in general transit testing, at a height set by the packed weight.
CheckMethodWorking criterionWhat it catches
Board gradeEdge crush test on the boardECT 32 for a single-bag carton under about 10 kgCartons that crush in the bottom layer of a stack
Burst strengthMullen burst on the boardAround 200 psi as the alternative specificationBoard that punctures rather than crushes
Board moisturePin meter at four pointsUnder about 14% at packing and at destinationBoard that has taken water in transit or in storage
Drop sequenceTen drops: one corner, three edges, six facesFrom 76 cm for a carton under 10 kg, contents undamagedCorners that fail on the single most common impact
Dimension toleranceSteel rule on three axesWithin 3 mm of the stated internal sizeA box too tight to close or too loose to protect
Packed weightCalibrated scale, carton by cartonWithin 5% of the declared weight on the labelShort packing and mismatched freight documents

The corner drop is the one that matters most and the one most often skipped, because a carton dropped flat on a face usually survives and a carton dropped on a corner frequently does not.

What Goes Inside the Box, and in What Order?

Interior order is specified as a sequence rather than a list, because two boxes containing identical items packed in a different order do not open the same way.

  1. The dust bag, with the bag inside it, drawstring closed but not pulled tight.
  2. The bag itself, handles folded inward and the silhouette supported at the base.
  3. Tissue, folded rather than crumpled, filling the voids without compressing the piece.
  4. The care card and authenticity card, placed in a stated position rather than loose.
  5. The silica gel sachet, at roughly 5 grams, placed where it cannot press on the leather.

The last two lines cause the recurring faults. A card placed loose migrates and arrives bent, and a sachet placed under a panel leaves a mark that looks like a material fault and takes an hour to explain.

Write the order into the specification with the approved reference box photographed from above at packing. One image settles more disputes about presentation than any paragraph has ever managed to.

How Are the Dust Bag and Tissue Specified?

Both are specified by weight, thread count and finish rather than by adjective, because soft and good quality do not appear on a purchase order anywhere in the world.

Tissue paper
Around 17 gsm, acid-free, folded not crumpled, no printing on the face side
Dust bag
Cotton or 210T nylon, with the drawstring specified by material and length
Void fill
Enough that the piece does not move when the carton is shaken gently
Branding on packaging
Stamp or print position given as a measurement from a stated edge
Silica gel
About 5 grams per carton, placed clear of any leather surface
Polybag, where used
Ventilated, with holes specified, so the piece is not sealed against its own moisture

Acid-free is the line worth insisting on. Ordinary tissue carries enough acid to mark a pale leather over a long storage period, and the mark appears after the goods have been accepted, which is the worst possible timing.

Does the Label Scan, and Does It Match the Order?

Labelling is the only packaging check that can be fully automated, and it is the one that produces the most expensive failures when it is skipped, because a carton that will not scan stops at a distribution centre rather than at a bench.

  • Scan every barcode on every carton, not a sample: scanning is fast and a miss is costly.
  • Match the style and colourway codes on the label against the purchase order line by line.
  • Confirm the quantity per carton is stated and that the stated count matches the packed count.
  • Check the label sits on the stated face, in the stated position, so it is visible when stacked.
  • Verify the shipping mark matches the destination, since a mis-marked carton travels a long way before anyone notices.

A mismatch between the label and the order is a documentation fault rather than a construction fault, and it belongs in the minor class. Its consequence, however, is closer to a major one, because it is discovered far from the bench.

How Is Presentation Graded When It Is Taste?

Presentation is graded against a sealed reference box rather than against an opinion, and the grading is done in three bands so that a single imperfect fold does not reject a season.

01

Conforming

Matches the sealed reference box in every stated respect: order, tissue fold, card position and closure. Counted as passing, and recorded rather than commented on.

02

Acceptable variation

A departure no customer would notice, such as tissue folded marginally looser or a card a few millimetres off its stated position. Recorded and released, and watched for recurrence.

03

Non-conforming

A departure visible on opening: missing item, wrong item, crushed tissue, marked leather from a sachet. Counted against the plan and reworked before the carton is sealed.

The middle band is what keeps a packaging inspection proportionate. Without it, every box with a slightly loose fold becomes an argument, and the argument costs considerably more than the fold ever did. With it, the recorded recurrence rate becomes the useful signal: one loose fold is noise, and twelve in a day is a training problem.

The Ten Checks Before a Carton Is Sealed

These ten are made on every carton at packing, and every one of them is far cheaper to make then than after the tape is on.

  1. Board moisture under about 14% at the moment of packing.
  2. Internal dimensions within 3 mm of the stated size.
  3. Dust bag present, correct, drawstring closed but not tight.
  4. Bag seated with handles folded inward and the base supported.
  5. Tissue acid-free, folded, filling voids without compressing the piece.
  6. Cards present, in their stated position, not loose.
  7. Silica sachet present and clear of any leather surface.
  8. Style and colourway codes correct against the order line.
  9. Barcode present, scannable, and on the stated face.
  10. Packed weight within 5% of the declared weight.

Ten checks sounds like a lot until it is timed. Done at packing by the person closing the box, the whole sequence adds seconds, and it removes essentially every packaging fault that would otherwise be found at destination. Timed across a full day, the sequence rarely adds more than a few minutes to the packing of a lot.

Who Checks the Packing, and When

Packing checks belong to the person closing the carton rather than to the final inspector, because every one of the ten is unrecoverable once the tape is on.

That has one consequence worth stating plainly. The ten-point list has to be visible at the packing table, in the language the packers read, with the sequence in the order the work is actually done. A list held in a quality manual is a list that will be followed for the first carton of the day and then not at all.

The final inspector then verifies rather than discovers: a sample of opened cartons checked against the sealed reference box, and the barcode read on every carton. Discovery at that stage is rework, and rework at packing stage is the most expensive kind there is.

How Packaging Enters the Inspection Plan

Packaging enters the inspection plan as a separate section with its own defect classes, because it is inspected at a different moment and by a different method from the bag itself.

Six lines to add to the inspection clause

  • Board: ECT 32 or about 200 psi burst, moisture under 14% at packing and at destination.
  • Transit: ten drops, one corner then three edges then six faces, height set by packed weight.
  • Interior: the packing sequence written as an order, with the approved box photographed.
  • Materials: tissue around 17 gsm and acid-free, dust bag specified by weight and thread count.
  • Labelling: every barcode scanned, codes matched to the order line, mark matched to the destination.
  • Grading: three bands against a sealed reference box, with the middle band recorded and released.

The rest of the programme sits around it unchanged: MOQ 500 pcs per style and colourway, sampling in 6-10 working days and 12-15 for complex constructions, bulk in 35-50 days, inspection at AQL 2.5 under ISO 2859-1, and handover on FOB Xiamen terms. Export experience on this programme runs since 2014 across 7 production lines with about 200,000 pcs per month of capacity, delivered through our validated partner factory Quanzhou Yingming Bags.

One number makes the case for all of it. Reworking a single closure on a piece that has reached a customer costs around USD 4.80 in parts and bench time before freight, and a carton that fails at a distribution centre costs more than the contents of the carton.

Specify the board before the ribbon

Packaging specifications almost always open with the ribbon, the tissue and the stamp, and close with a line about a strong carton. Invert that. The measurable half of the specification is what protects the goods; the sensory half is what presents them, and only one of the two causes a claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does packaging QC check on a luxury handbag order?

Four things in order: that the carton survives a defined transit sequence, that the interior matches the approved specification, that labelling scans and matches the order, and that ten checks were made before the carton was sealed.

How strong should a handbag carton be?

Edge crush test 32 is the working figure for a single-bag carton under about 10 kg, or roughly 200 psi burst as the alternative specification. Both are measurable; a description like strong carton is not, and it cannot be checked at goods-in.

What is the ten-drop sequence?

One corner, then three edges, then six faces, ten drops in all. Height is set by the packed weight and is around 76 cm for a carton under 10 kg. The corner drop matters most because cartons dropped flat usually survive and those dropped on a corner often do not.

Why is board moisture measured at packing?

Because board that is already damp will soften and crush in a stack regardless of its stated grade. Under about 14 percent at packing and again at destination separates a board fault from a transit exposure, which are two very different conversations.

How is tissue paper specified?

By weight and chemistry rather than by feel: around 17 gsm and acid-free. Acid-free is the line worth insisting on, because ordinary tissue carries enough acid to mark a pale leather over a long storage period, and the mark appears after acceptance.

How is a dust bag specified?

By material, weight and thread count, with the drawstring given its own material and length. Cotton or 210T nylon are both workable. Specifying by adjective leaves nothing to check against when the delivery arrives and something looks different.

Should every barcode be scanned or only a sample?

Every one. Scanning is fast and a carton that will not scan stops at a distribution centre rather than at a bench, which is the most expensive possible place for the fault to be discovered. Sampling a scannable item saves nothing worth saving.

Is a label mismatch a major or a minor defect?

It is classified minor because the bag itself is sound, but its consequence is closer to major because it is discovered far from the bench. Classify it in the library in advance so the count is not negotiated at the packing table.

How is presentation graded when it is a matter of taste?

Against a sealed reference box, in three bands: conforming, acceptable variation and non-conforming. The middle band is what keeps the inspection proportionate, so that one slightly loose tissue fold is recorded rather than rejected.

Where should the silica sachet be placed?

Clear of any leather surface, at roughly 5 grams per carton. A sachet left pressed against a panel leaves a mark that looks exactly like a material fault and takes an hour to explain, which is far longer than placing it correctly takes.

What are the ten checks made before a carton is sealed?

Board moisture, internal dimensions, dust bag, seating of the piece, tissue, cards, sachet placement, style and colourway codes, a scannable barcode in the right position, and packed weight within 5 percent of the declared figure.

Why does packaging get its own section in the inspection plan?

Because it is inspected at a different moment and by a different method from the bag: at packing rather than at final count, and by measurement and scanning rather than by visual grading. Mixing the two makes neither count reliable.

People Also Ask

What packaging checks matter most for handbags?

Carton strength and board moisture first, then the interior sequence, then labelling. The measurable half protects the goods; the sensory half presents them, and only the first of those two generates a freight claim.

What board grade should a handbag carton use?

Edge crush test 32 for a single-bag carton under about 10 kg, or roughly 200 psi burst as the alternative. Board moisture should sit under about 14 percent at packing and again at destination.

How many drops does a transit test use?

Ten: one corner, three edges and six faces. Height follows the packed weight, at around 76 cm for a carton under 10 kg, and the criterion is that the contents arrive undamaged rather than that the carton looks intact.

Why use acid-free tissue in luxury packaging?

Ordinary tissue carries enough acid to mark pale leather during long storage, and the mark appears after the goods have been accepted, which is the worst possible moment for a fault to surface.

Should packaging defects count toward the same AQL?

They should be counted separately with their own classes. Labelling mismatches are minor by nature but major by consequence, so naming them in the defect library beforehand prevents the count being negotiated at the packing table.
